When I get ready to start my day, things like showering, my beard, my outfit, and breakfast immediately cross my mind, but not often clipping my fingernails. It seems so menial, and yet shocking once we realize how much of an impact well groomed nails can play on everyday situations.
For some like myself, this is much less obvious, but flew on my radar after partnering with a company called Azurro to test out their CLIPPERPRO Nail Clipper.
The CLIPPERPRO is kind of a revolutionary product in a world where nail clipper technology, as far as I’m concerned, hasn’t really seen a ton of progress other than not using regular scissors (Ouch…). But this brand-new concept was the brainchild of three orthopedic surgeons who pooled their knowledge of surgical instruments to change the way we’ve basically been forced to clip our nails!
Designed with an ergonomic mechanism, the CLIPPERPRO is held with the palm of your hand instead of a few fingers, which provides more control when making a cut. What I appreciate most as a left-handed person is that the blade of the clipper rotates 180° so I can finally find a comfortable position with my right hand to clip with confidence.
The first time I used these, I legitimately laughed the whole time — it was such a foreign sensation, but it cut more precise than my cheapo nail clippers. Afterward, it got me thinking more about fingernails.
I asked The Next Gentleman’s all-gender Instagram audience a few simple questions about men’s fingernails. We got over 100 responses for each question, here are the results!
1. 71% of first impressions are influenced by a man’s fingernails
Be it a first date, an interview, meeting the in-laws, or sitting next to somebody on a train, 71% of people form their first impression of a man while taking his nails into consideration. This could mean length or the lack thereof, cleanliness, or even if they’re manicured, but seven out of every ten people a man meets will be looking at his fingernails for clues.
2. 76% of people said grown-out fingernails bother them on a man or spouse
The sense of touch is a part of every healthy relationship, except when a man’s fingernails are too long! I personally used to love having my back or scalp scratched when I was a young lad, but I guess people aren’t feeling this one!
3. 18% of nails are bite-a-cured
We’ve got some biters here. 18% of people who polled said they trimmed their nails by biting them. I was kind of alarmed when I saw this so I went to Google to look around, but another poll conducted by Dollar Shave Club saw 23% of people who groomed via biting!
4. 67% of people can’t type when their nails are too long
I don’t know if their long nails cause a temporary paralysis causing them to physically not be able to type on a keyboard, but I’m with them on this one. I CAN NOT STAND the feeling of typing on a flat MacBook keyboard with long fingernails. Let’s talk about pet peeves — that’s one of them.
