Because we know some of you should NOT be drinking tequila (LOL), here’s a margarita for Cinco de Mayo with something else
On May 4th, we celebrate Star Wars. The next day, we celebrate Mexico for beating France in something other than futbol. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the day the Mexican army’s victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. For the record, this was one single battle in the Franco-Mexican War.
Now, I’ve asked a handful of my Mexican heritage friends here in Los Angeles about this holiday and its significance — I’m curious to learn. Each friend told me, roughly, that they weren’t really sure why people celebrate Cinco de Mayo in the United States. American people, as they do, may have just decided to adopt the holiday to celebrate Mexican culture.
There’s a lot of drinking that happens on Cinco de Mayo, similarly to St. Patrick’s Day. And, while it definitely fills me with joy to be a party pooper in the festive social, or should I say “slosh-al” circle, I’ve come across a fun, festive beverage to give into the Cinco spirit and be able to still hang out with my drunk friends.
I’m definitely not a tequila drinker — the usual alcoholic component in the classic margarita. But I recently concocted my own margarita for Cinco de Mayo using spiked seltzer instead of the other pants-dropping, honesty juice of a spirit.
The Spiked Seltzer Margarita
I had two different inspirations that lead me to crafting this. First, I went grocery shopping with my buddy and photog, Fabian, and ended up with some Mexican popsicles that were delicious. Second, I recently partnered with BON & VIV to promote their spiked seltzer — it’s actually pretty tasty! I thought by combining their fun flavors with the popsicle, we might have a little fun! Additionally, the low calorie and no sugar seltzer, the two 40 calorie popsicles, and the fresh fruits make for a much healthier option than your classic at-home marg!
